On a recent meet up with the legend that is Emma, we went to the cinema to watch the new release Eternity starring Elizabeth Olsen and MIles Teller. It takes a simple concept in the afterlife you have to choose one thing to do for eternity. It can eb anything, now obviously the film isn't as straight forward as that, they is a love triangle involving two husbands who both had the same wife, one for two years before dying whilst away at war and one for 65 years. Both had different ideas on how they wanted to spend there afterlife's with her,
The whole concept of being able to choose how you spend your afterlife was played with some great comedy a particular favourite of mine was experience 1938 Germany now with 100% less Nazi's Or explore psace where you can finally touch Uranus (nothing like a little juvenile humour is there?) . I fully recommend watching it, in fact I would put it in my top three films of the year.
But what of the afterlife, is there a heaven and hell or do we just fade from existence? I'm not going to go to deep into the philosophical discussions on the subject but it made me think of what I would do if I had an eternity to do something. The obvious ideas came into my head, a never ending party with my friends. Something like we had at the annual drink the bar dry at the Student Union, the end of my first year being one of the best nights out that I've ever had. Picture the scene, the drinks were ridiculously low as everything had to go before the summer close down. It was one of those rare nights that everyone in our group was out, there were loads of what I called the extras, those people that you bumped into every so often and could have fun with. The SubClub was overflowing so they opened up the two upstairs bars as well, everyone drinking and having a good time. It brings a smile to my face remembering that night, I'd recently had the now infamous bend it like Brendan haircut (a Mohican that curved around my head and then just for fun dyed green), I had enough money to have a good time, I acquired the attentions of a young lady called Sarah for the night and everything for the night just seem perfect. No fights, no squabbles just everyone having a hell of night. Who wouldn't think it was a good way to spend eternity.
Another couple of ideas that popped into my head was a cinema world, where you can watch endless movies of all genres with unlimited snacks and drinks or something similar a never ending wrestling convention with fellows fans where we could watch matches, play video games maybe even get in the squared circle and have a fight or two. Both are very unique to me but I think it would be fun to be surrounded by fellow geeks, spending eternity trying to outdo each other with random facts and figures.
Being taken in my favourite TV show Red Dwarf and exploring the outer reaches of the universe aboard the big red ship also sprang into my mind, but that came with the added dilemma would I be a new character or would I take over from one of the usual cast? As a complete tangent away from this post. I recently read that when you're growing up Lister was the one you wanted to be but when you grow up and see how life is you realise that Rimmer was right all along.
Being on a never ending cruise as well popped into my head, all that good food and parties with activites with new people getting on every stop, it would feed into my love of travel and being able to eat lots of good food, who knows if you'll put weight on? Well there's spa's and gyms on board to keep on top of any over indulging!
I've often joked with my friend Charlene that we are both going to end up in hell with the offensive memes we send each other and the dark thoughts that we've played out in our head that may or may not involve causing bodily harm to those that have wronged us in the past and Mariah Carey. We would no doubt have a brilliant time down there, though it might be a little on the hot side and as she is a natural red head she might get a bit of sunburn.
Now I did say that I wasn't going to get to deep into the philosophical elements on what what happens to us in the afterlife, if there even is one. I do believe it can summed up best by the lyrics in My Game My Rules by Slamboree
No matter what your views on religion and spirituality
They all boil down to one thing
We don't have a fucking clue
And never will until it's over
Choose the view you like and let others choose theirs
But they all boil down
To the forces of awesome or the forces of bastard
Good vs. Evil
Positive vs. Negative
We're made out of the potentiality for both
It's up to us to decide our measures
So feed the right habits
Armageddon isn't happening outside in the world
We might think it's the end of the world
But that's because it just might be
the end of ours
It's playing out individually in all our heads, you see
We get to choose the outcome with the way we behave
Be your own god and your own devil
He's got all the best tunes anyway
Eternity, it's a long time isn't it? You don't want to be stuck somewhere you're not being happy do you?
