'Bro'

The Bro Code, we've all heard about it before, such things as 'Bro's before hoes' being commonplace, but what does it actually mean? We hear characters like Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother endlessly quote different rules from it. A little research and apparently there are 150 rules contained within his version of it. Mostly concerned with close male friends and there obligations to each other, and in ways that they should aid them in the pursuit of women.

Anniversaries

Now before I get into the bones of this post, I want to make it crystal clear that I'm in a good place now. I haven't had any of those thoughts in a long time, my mental health is in a much better place than it was back then and even though there are some depressing moments coming up in this post you can rest assured that I'm doing ok and that these things are things I've discussed in therapy and with friends and have worked through to make some conclusions that for some may seem strange but they work for me.

Totally unacceptable

If you follow me on Facebook then you'll know that I have a semi regular series entitled things you'll only hear in Boston Bowl. Now normally these are funny things like one of my staff members telling me that she wonders how she managed to get grated cheese in her phone case, to the weird ones like do you think it's weird that I'm wearing my brothers underwear, to random things that customers say like "I hope you don't finger my Guinness while I'm gone". I could go on here but let me assure you they are all 100% genuine.

Fitness....

I used to be fit, not in the attractive way, I don't think I could ever claim to be that in a million years! No in the actual health wise, I used to be a very fit, agile young person, who could play pretty much any sport half decently.  Football was my chief source of exercise, but I also played rounders and cricket for the school. I used to even go for cross country runs around the Lincolnshire countryside just for the fun of it. It also wasn't unheard of me to play the occasional game of handball or hockey and on one occasion netball.

Songs

In a previous post I spoke of songs that remind of certain situations or events that I found myself in, this one is a bit more of the same, but more specific, songs that remind me of certain people. I only have to hear the opening bars of certain songs and there face pops into my head, or maybe it's a certain lyric and pop there they are running around bringing back memories.

Confidence

Anyone who knows me would say the one thing I lack is confidence, in fact some people from my past might claim that I  suffer from over confidence sometimes. Little do they know that in the past I've battled with self confidence to the degree where it almost crippled my day to day life.

Live Music at it's best

Music is all around us in our day to day lives. The songs we hear on TV and radio, the ever present background to our life. It can pump us up, chill us out, remind us of days gone by, make us think of loved ones, of enemies, of lovers and everything in between. That being said there is nothing like live music being played in front of you.

Challenge 10 Completed

Another one crossed off the list and that makes it 10% completed, I never expected to cross them off this quickly! This was one of the easier ones to do and I was down in London again (seems I spend more time down there than in Boston at the minute!) I thought I would cross off number 88, a trip to The London Mithraerium.

What's in a name?

Recently in a coffee shop awaiting my order with Emma, the barista called out Brenda when giving me my black coffee and then Brandon when giving me the medium hot chocolate with cream. She found this highly amusing, however it's something I've got used to in my life. People are constantly spelling my name wrong, whether it be on educational certificates, or lease agreements, it's become something of a running joke, one that I don't see ending any time soon.

Challenge 9 Complete!

Legend is a word thrown about a little to often for my liking. You only have to watch some of the reality TV shows to hear it thrown about loosely. TV legend ....insert name here of someone from third rate show like TOWIE or my own personal favourite wrestling legend....insert name here of someone who once appeared as a jobber on Monday Night Raw in the 1990's. Then there are true legends of there field and this challenge is all about honouring two of the true legends of British TV comedy, Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson.

Parklife - Vindication!

For the years that I lived in Luton my home away from home was this fine establishment, The Park. Located on Park Street right next to the university I hate to think of how much time and money I spent in there. On the surface it's no where special, your bog standard average student bar that existed, big screen TV's on which we watched every football match going, some crappy pool tables that we attempted to play on, an IT box on which I personally wasted so much money on, it's here I would like to boast a little and say that I was the first person to win the jackpot twice in a day!

Challenge 8 Complete!

It's been a while since I checked one off my challenge list and I took the opportunity having a free day in London Town to do just that. Challenge number 83 to visit the Greenwich Royal Observatory. This one is all about celebrating the geek in me, with a touch of nationalistic pride.

Grandad Sweets

I have often said I'm lucky that I have a young family. I was privileged to get to know some of my great grandparents and my grandparents. I've been lucky that they've been able to play a huge role in my life, something I know not everyone gets to have. Today I want to focus on one person who made a huge impact on my life, my Great Grandad.

War of the Worlds......ULLLLAAAAHHHH!

One of the great loves of my life is the War of the Worlds, the movies, the book, the musical, I love them all! They tap into everything I love about science fiction, it is the quintessential story, alien's arrive try to take over the world, exterminate the human race and the plans get derailed, the human race survives and learns to accept that that aren't the only beings in the universe. It's been done a million times since and will no doubt be done a million times more, but this was the story that made me fall in love with sci-fi.

Glow

One of my first ever girlfriends, Lauren, used to have this saying, a good day was one that was covered in glow. Now 15 year old me thought this was one of the most stupidest things he'd ever heard but now I can look back on certain days in my life and yes they very much are covered in glow. They give you that warm nostalgic feeling that makes you smile when you think about what went on that day, when you close your eyes remembering just how much fun you had wishing you could relive it.

To remake or not to remake

Remakes of classic films are always a little bit hit and miss for every Heat there is a Rollerball, for every Dune parts 1 and 2 there is a Planet of the Apes or Total Recall, and don't even get me started on the remake of the Karate Kid.

Reputations and Nostalgia

Sometimes reputations outlive their applications, it's a line from one of my favourite films of all time Empire Records, more specifically it's a line from the song Sugarhigh by Coyote Shivers made especially for the film. It's a line I've often thought of when I think of some of the people from my past. Some people will always be stuck in a box in my head as to what they were and not what they've become. It's wrong of me to pigeonhole them like that but I think we're all guilty of it.
